Wilderness Safety Project
Program
Abstract
States
in the intermountain west offer the most scenic and beautiful
wilderness recreation opportunities in North America. We enjoy
a wide variety of recreational experiences including camping,
hiking, skiing, fishing, boating and more. It’s no wonder
that so many young people flock to the hills and deserts, lakes
and streams and snow covered mountains each year to enjoy the
splendor and beauty of the intermountain west.
Each
year thousands of young campers and hikers, along with their families
and youth organizations, take advantage of outdoor adventures
in our wilderness areas without remarkable incident. But, as infinitely
beautiful as our mountains and deserts are, they can be equally
unforgiving. Campers and hikers not familiar with these wilderness
areas may find themselves ill-prepared to deal with unexpected
changes in climate and surroundings and may find themselves lost
in a relentless wilderness.
Unfortunately for some, not all of these experiences are incident-free,
and sometimes they result in frightening and sometimes even fatal
experiences, devastating families and the community.
We
believe that an effective wilderness safety program for young
campers and hikers would deliver this important information directly
to those who need it, where they need it - in classrooms and at
home. A carefully developed curriculum targeted to specific age
groups (i.e., elementary through high-school aged students) with
support materials for parents, guardians and youth organization
leaders can provide valuable and lifesaving information at little
or no cost to the recipient.
