YouthReach™ - Adventures for Disadvantaged Kids

The White House reports -

"The complexity of the problems faced by disadvantaged youth is...confusing, complicated, and costly.

"Ideally, we want the families and communities of young people to be able to supply all that they need—love, a secure childhood...discipline of character, a sense of personal responsibility, and a commitment to their communities and their country. Most young Americans are raised in this kind of environment, and they grow up to be healthy, responsible, and productive citizens.

"But there are children who have the same dreams for their own futures, whose daily realities make those dreams seem forever out of reach..."

Executive Summary of the
Final Report of the White House
Task Force for Disadvantaged Youth
October 2003

We recognize and understand that there are countless circumstances that place kids in the position of being disadvantaged. Some struggle with social, economic and health issues, others may experience challenges that interfere with their ability to function as other youth do - no matter the challenge, we want to make sure there are no limits to what kids can do in the outdoors.

Outdoors Unlimited's YouthReach® programs are designed to provide exciting outdoors and recreation activities that help kids build character and self-reliance; important social, leadership and life skills; and give them a chance to experience programs that they may not otherwise have access to or believe they cannot participate in.

WoodsWise™ Wilderness Safety Project

Program Abstract

States in the intermountain west offer the most scenic and beautiful wilderness recreation opportunities in North America. We enjoy a wide variety of recreational experiences including camping, hiking, skiing, fishing, boating and more. It’s no wonder that so many young people flock to the hills and deserts, lakes and streams and snow covered mountains each year to enjoy the splendor and beauty of the intermountain west.

Each year thousands of young campers and hikers, along with their families and youth organizations, take advantage of outdoor adventures in our wilderness areas without remarkable incident. But, as infinitely beautiful as our mountains and deserts are, they can be equally unforgiving. Campers and hikers not familiar with these wilderness areas may find themselves ill-prepared to deal with unexpected changes in climate and surroundings and may find themselves lost in a relentless wilderness.

Unfortunately for some, not all of these experiences are incident-free, and sometimes they result in frightening and sometimes even fatal experiences, devastating families and the community.

We believe that an effective wilderness safety program for young campers and hikers would deliver this important information directly to those who need it, where they need it - in classrooms and at home. A carefully developed curriculum targeted to specific age groups (i.e., elementary through high-school aged students) with support materials for parents, guardians and youth organization leaders can provide valuable and lifesaving information at little or no cost to the recipient.
